Obituary for Curtis Chappell

Curtis Chappell, 94, of Dawsonville passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on Tuesday July 7, 2020 following a period of declining health.
Curtis was born October 14, 1925 in Langdale, Alabama to the late Joseph and Avie Chappell. Following high school he joined the U. S. Navy and served 8 years. After returning from the Navy he earned a B.S. degree from Livingston State College and a Masters degree from Auburn University. Mr. Chappell taught school in Richland, GA, was a coach and teacher in Norcross, GA, served as principal at Beulah Elementary School in Douglasville, GA, served as principal at New Holland Elementary School in Gainesville, GA, was the High School principal at Towns County High School in Hiwassee, GA, and served as principal at Dawson County Elementary School. After retiring from education, he served 8 years as the Dawson County Clerk of Court. He was an active member of Liberty Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Church Treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent, assistant church clerk and assistant Sunday School teacher. Curtis was a very loving husband, father and grandfather. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Jo Bacon, Eyvonne Taylor, Johnnie Pearl; and a brother, Murry Chappell.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Leila Jennings Chappell; daughter and son in law, Cathy and Billy Carlisle; sons and daughter in law, Len Chappell, Carey and Rita Chappell, all of Dawsonville; grandchildren, Chad Carlisle, Heather Polman, Cara Nix, Beth Barron, Joseph Carlisle, Laryssa Ubom; and 7 great grandchildren.
Due to concerns of COVID-19, the family respectfully requests to have private services.
