Obituary for Jane Catherine Hamilton

Jane Catherine Hamilton, 93, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, November 21, 2021 She passed away at the Oaks at Gracemont in Cumming, GA. She was an amazing Christian wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved entertaining, gardening, and reading. Born July 25, 1928, in New York City to the late William Laurence and Jane Catherine Hartman, she lived in several NY towns, in Minneapolis, MN and Greenwich, CT before moving to GA in 1970. There she lived in Marietta, Murrayville, Gainesville, and Cumming.

Jane graduated from Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in NYC, then married Archer W. Hamilton in 1948. Her career included executive and legal secretary, real estate, and insurance. She raised her five children in Greenwich, CT. Jane was active in church Sunday School; the Greenwich Schools PTA, initiating the first children’s book club; the Junior Women’s Club of Greenwich where she raised money for local charities; and she was active in the Girl Scouts. In Georgia, Jane served on her church Vestry; was active in the Chattahoochee Garden Club, the children’s swim, tennis, and football teams; and was active in forming the first drug awareness program for the Cobb County School System. Later, Jane remained active in church activities, helping to form an Episcopal Church in Dahlonega, GA, helping women and children from domestic violence, and mentoring school children. Jane and her husband were founding members of the Church of the Apostles in Dawsonville, GA.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Valerie Lee Johns, and by her brother, William Laurence Hartman. Jane is survived by her husband of 73 years, Archer W. Hamilton; daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Roger Johnson, Hartwell; daughter, Vickie Hamilton, Decatur; daughter and fiancé, Sally Hamilton and Paul Santora, Cos Cob, CT; son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Carolyn Hamilton, Murrayville; grandchildren, Kimberly Bella, Stephen Johns, Christopher Johnson, Brian Johnson, Nick Tennies, Chad Tennies, and Tony Hamilton. Jane is also survived by great-grandchildren, Lennon and Tatum Bella, Elizabeth and Madeline Johnson.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. at Church of the Apostles in Dawsonville, GA, followed by a reception. At 12:00 p.m., prior to the service, the family will receive friends at the church.
