Obituary for Penelope Jean Putnam
Penelope Jean Putnam (“Penny”) passed away on May 6, 2020 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, Georgia at the age of 65 from several medical difficulties.
Penny was born September 24, 1954, the daughter of Robert and Zoe Putnam in Louisville KY. She was a graduate of Lewiston-Porter High School close to Niagara Falls, NY and graduated in 1976 from Maryville College close to Knoxville, TN, with a degree in Art Education. Penny has maintained very close friendships with her Maryville group.
Penny moved to Washington DC where she worked as a tax librarian then to Plano, TX where she began a successful career as a day care director. She worked for Kinder Care there then moved to Atlanta in 1980 where she directed several more Kinder Care locations, truly an Executive Director “extraordinaire” (she loved the children and parents and they loved her.) She then worked for Peachtree Presbyterian Church and The Chastain School as director of child care.
Penny moved up to Dawsonville, Ga in 2012 and shared a home with her mother on beautiful Lake Lanier. She relished her time serving as Executive Director of Good Shepherd Clinic that provides free non-emergency health services to uninsured residents until 2015. She was such a hard worker no matter what she did.
In Atlanta, Penny was an active member of St. John United Methodist Church. She has remained close friends with her “St. John gang”. Her faith and devotion to Jesus Christ were furthered by her attending the Walk to Emmaus spiritual retreat then serving on many subsequent “walks” and later on the Board of the North Georgia Walk to Emmaus community. In Dawsonville, Penny was a founding member and deeply devoted to her church and church family at Grace Presbyterian Church. She participated in many Bible studies over the years.
Penny and her parents travelled worldwide on many fascinating trips including to Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. She was incredibly creative, knowledgeable in art, history, geography and current events. She loved her family and was an avid reader; Penny was passionate and indulgent to her dogs Darby, Suzie and Missy.
Penny had an infectious smile and contagious laugh. She cheered up those around her.
Penny is survived by her mother Zoe Putnam and brother Michael Putnam of Dawsonville, and brother Bobby (Barbara) of Vail, CO and many nieces and nephews who she adored.
She was preceded in death by her father, Bob Putnam in 2004.
