Obituary for Roger D. Slaton

Roger D. Slaton, 80, of Dawsonville passed away Sunday June 6, 2021 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Mr. Slaton was born May 25, 1941 to the late Charles and Kathleen Slaton. He was a lifelong resident of his beloved Dawson County. Roger was a devoted Christian who loved serving the Lord. He was an extremely talented pianist, deacon at both Concord and Silver City Baptist Churches, choir director, and Sunday School teacher. He loved to support all the churches in his community and late in his life was called to serve as a missionary who took many trips, both in and out of the country to help spread the love of Jesus. Roger was a graduate of the University of Georgia and served Dawson County as a State Farm Insurance agent for 40 years. Since the 1970s he had served on the Dawson County Board of Education. He had a great love of the school system and especially the youth of Dawson County. Roger enjoyed supporting students through attending sporting events, pageants, concerts, and many other school activities. Roger served in many leadership roles including the board of Lanier Technical College, Relay For Life, and an active past president of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce. A loving and devoted husband, father and “Pop”, Roger was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Loretta Slaton; brother, Wallace Slaton; niece, Lori Slaton; brother-in-law, David Cantrell.
Surviving are his children, Barry and Lora Slaton, Dawsonville, Chuck and Frankie Slaton, Gainesville, Julie and Jason Stanfield, Dawsonville; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Eloise Slaton, Austell, Jeanie and Buford Kinsey, Cleveland, Carol and Jack Westmoreland, Clarkesville, Eva Nix, Rome, Wilma Dorsey, Cleveland, Ronald and Helen Cantrell, Hiawassee, Barbara Cantrell, Clayton; grandchildren, Tyler and Maddie Slaton, Riley and Devin Gearhart, Brittan Slaton, Charles “Chaz” Slaton, Mollie Stanfield, Elijah Stanfield, Abby Samples-Slaton; a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday June 9, 2021 at 1 p.m. at Silver City Baptist Church. Rev. Russell Burt, Rev. Brody Hughes, Rev. Tim Biddy, Rev. Chris Gilbert, Rev. Stephen Davis and Rev. Shannon Westbrook will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday June 7 from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Tuesday June 8 from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m.
